Rebate Pathways
Different referral types have different fee and rebate structures. It is important that you are aware of and understand the type of referral you have prior to engaging services as you may have out of pocket expenses that you were not aware of and/or that may cause you unnecessary distress.
Better Access to Mental Health Care Initiative (Mental Health Care Plan)
· You must be referred under a Mental Health Treatment Plan by your GP, a paediatrician or psychiatrist. You must bring your referral with your Mental Health Treatment Plan to your appointment.
· After 6 appointments the referrer will be provided with a report from your psychologist. This report will outline the assessment and treatment provided, recommendations and if necessary, a request for further appointments.
· If further appointments are required, you will need to return to the referrer for a review. The review will determine eligibility for up to an additional 4 appointments (totalling 10 appointments in a calendar year).
· You can then return to the psychologist for the specified number of appointments.
· You will need to pay for your full appointment costs at the time of your appointment and then you will receive a Medicare rebate (if the correct referral is in place). There is always an out-of-pocket cost as we are not a bulk billing provider. As at January 2025 Medicare Rebate is $96.65 per 50 minute session.
Example: iPsych Wellness Services $190 - Medicare rebate $96.65 = $93.35 out of pocket
Complex Neurodevelopmental Conditions
(formerly HCWA Initiative)
Assessment:
A consultant paediatrician or a consultant psychiatrist can refer under the Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorder Medical Benefit Scheme assessment items (previously HCWA).
This can be for up to 8 assessment sessions (in a lifetime) across a range of allied health professionals including psychology. Only 4 sessions can be allocated per discipline at a time before a review with the referring practitioner would be needed for more. Concurrent referrals to different allied health practitioners can be made.
Eligibility has increased from 13 years to up to 25 years of age. An allied health practitioner (in consultation with the referrer) can make an interdisciplinary referral. Allied health assessment items can also be used for assistance with developing a treatment and management plan.
You will need to pay for your full appointment costs at the time of your appointment and then you will receive a Medicare rebate (if the correct referral is in place). There is always an out-of-pocket cost as we are not a bulk billing provider. As at January 2025 Medicare rebate is $96.65 per 50 minute session.
Treatment:
Once a diagnosis of a Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorder has been made, and the consultant paediatrician or psychiatrist has a treatment and management plan in place, they can refer to eligible allied health treatment practitioners, including psychology, for a total of 20 allied health treatment services (per lifetime). The paediatrician or psychiatrist can refer to multiple eligible allied health practitioner concurrently. There is a maximum of 10 services per course of treatment. Eligibility has increased from 15 years of age to 25 years of age.
